Over the past several years, we have been reminded continually of the special needs of readers in engineering and the social sciences for an appropriate treatment of statistical methods and the collection of sample data. We suspects that these special needs are similar for many people working in other areas, such as business management and public administration, and some branches of the medical sciences. Furthermore, many professionals involved in both practice and research find a need for a useful reference on statistical methods that covers a not-too-theoritical discussion of the methods and some clear indications of how, when, and where to use them.
