It is appropriate, on the republication of the first two books about soft systems methodology (SSM), to add new material written from the perspective of 1999. It would not be appropriate to change the text of the books themselves; they stand, telling the first part of the story. It seems appropriate to bring the story up to date by reflecting upon the 30 years of research on, and use of, SSM, and to offer a summing up of what is now a mature and much-tested process of inquiry into problem situation in human affairs.
