It's 1972. Six dropouts from IBM's Germany operation have struck out on their own. One, Claus Wellenreuther, is an expert at financial accounting software. His former customers will follow him wherever he goes, and so they forgive his less-than-corporate ritual: Every time Wellenreuther leaves a room after a meeting, he jumps up as he passes through the door, grabs the top of the door frame with both hands, and hangs there for several seconds. SAP has always been surprising, elusive, a chameleon in a three-piece suit. The upstart firm founded in Dietmar Hopp's living room has grown to the second largest software company in the world, yielding the top spot only to Microsoft, itsel an SAP partner that relies on SAP R/3 for financial accounting. Even SAP's awkward name-which stands for System Applications Products, not "Siphon Away Profits" or "Such a Pain," as wags would have it-belies the tremendously refined power of its enterprise software.
