The purpose of this book is to provide library administrators, staff, educators, and students with the background information they will need to make effective administrative decisions. The volume is intended to be a summary of important concepts and techniques related to library administration. Although some of the articles provide practical suggestion for improving overall library administration, this is not "how to" book and the reader will find no quick cures for library administrative problems. In compiling this book, we have deliberately avoided the excessively narrow perspectives which often permeate a collection of articles about library administration. Instead, we have adhered to our belief that those interested in library administration must understand concepts and approaches that are basic to administrative techniques, and that they must be exposed to the widest possible number of managerial perspectives in order that an understanding of what is, and what is not, relevant to a particular set of circumstances can be acquired. To obtain such an understanding requires knowledge of theory as well as practice, and obtaining a theoretical knowledge of library administration is thematic throughout the book.
