reporting Reporting as a craft is a complex of skills, methods, techniques, designs based on thought and experience; it can be described and it can be taught. The craft of reporting can be passed on, by those who have practiced and studied it and who understand it, to other who possess the capacity and the firm-bedded desire to develop it.
A book like reporting offers aid to those who hope to become reporters-any kinds of reporters-and to some who are reporters and want to do their work better; it is intended to help them understand and use the crafts and apply their artistic endowments in effective gathering and spreading of news materials. Though workmanlike and creditable news reporting may come from wise, balanced use of the crafts with a minimum of "artistic impulse" behind it, I do not believe that such impulse is ever wholly absent from effective reportorial work. The more art and craft are partners, the more each leans on and at the same time undergirds the other, the more notable the result will be.
This book essays to describe the principal craft of reporting so that their natures, uses, and potentialities may be clear, and to offer precept and example in which their artful as well as artistic effects are illustrated.
