This book ls modern organizations how to get a handle on their data throughs emphasis on the technology of database management systems (DBMS) and the management of data. It takes a broad view of data resource management stressing objectives, types of users, a model and typical functions of a comprehensive DBMS and the role and functions of a database administrator. With strong conceptual frameworks, the book provides effective background in the principles, approaches and technology of managing data using computers.
DBMS is interpreted broadly to include comprehensive data definition languages, high-level retrieval languages, integrity control, plus online screen management and other facilities which assit in developing data-based application systems now being called"fourth generation languages" or "application generators". The book integrates the hierachical, network and relational approaches to data management. One example database, of personnel organizational data, is developed and used throughout the book. New concepts of DBMS on microcomputers permeate the book. The very readble writing style is nontechnical; relevant technical topics are treated to give the average reader a sound understanding of the issues and solutions. All chapters feature a summary, exercises, and an annotated bibliography.
