<subfield code="a">Mathematical programming can be a very powerful tool in business, commerce and economics, helping to solve problems concerning the deployment of scarce resources. Many of its successful exponents are able mathematicians, but many more potential users do not find the standard mathematical texts particularly helpful. This book is intended for the non-mathematician, whether a practicing manager or a student of a business, economic or management discipline. It brings together the whole area of mathematical programming which is not usually treated together at this level, and the lucidly written text is complemented by a chapter of worked examples.

The usual trap for the non-mathematical user of mathematical programming is the adoption of 'cook-book' rules which usually give the right answer, without a true understanding of their use. The authors has tried to by-pass this ptfall by giving a basis to the techniques and illustrating some of the faults and problems likely to arise in the more involved procedures. As a futher aid, the text has been devised around a basic example as far as possible, and variations in the examples illustrate the necessity to change from one technique to another as their applicabilities change.</subfield>
