This collection of papers surveys major issues of theory and practice in testing English for academic purposes. General problems of testing language for communicative purposes are surveyed, together with analyses of specificy of test, the relationship between achievement and proficiency and validation. Detailed consideration is then given to the design and implementation of three particular tests. This discussion is highly practical, and relates problems in test design to social and educational contexts in real situations.
