There is a role for research that can be of help to individuals and to organizations and which can also help illuminate (even in a small way) some aspects of individual and organizational theory. For too long, the social sciences have been plagued with the dichotomy of basic versus applied research and one could do one or the other but not both. The desire to explore the interrelationships among the many levels of a system makes it difficult to allocate time and resource to explore, in detail the interrelationships within each level.
